THE PARAGRAPH

1.    The Definition of Paragraph
Before understanding the definition of paragraph, we have to know the definition of words and sentences. Word is a unit which is a constituent at the phrase level and above. It will represent an idea that composed of one or more letters. However, it is not enough to express thoughts. When the writers want to communicate their ideas, they will use sentences. A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought. A complete sentence usually has subject and a main verb to state a complete thought.
Letters can be combined into words, and then the words can be combined into sentences. From the sentences can be combined into paragraph, and finally the paragraph can be combined into an essay. In this chapter, we will focus on the paragraph writing.  The relationship of the writing terms letter, word, sentence, paragraph, and essay.
Moreover, Zemach and Carlos said that a paragraph is a group of about 6-12 sentences about one topic. Every sentence explains the writer’s main idea (most important idea) about that topic[1]. The sentences consist of a group or series of sentences closely related to one another and to the thought expressed by the whole group or series. When, each sentence in a paragraph must be tied to the one before and after it, it is said to have unity. Then, if the paragraph uses some links by using special words (transitions words), it is called by coherence.
